I say this a lot, but it’s worth repeating: if you’ve invested time, energy, and money into organising what you hope will be an unforgettable celebration with your closest friends and family, don’t let your lasting memories be limited to a hangover and a handful of blurry phone photos.
This birthday party was always going to be something special — a truly glamorous and epic event — and I was delighted to be there to photograph it. My aim was to capture the atmosphere, the details, and the moments that made the evening memorable.
While I generally avoid overly posed images, there’s always a natural window at the start of an event when guests are arriving, greeting one another, and reconnecting with old friends. These moments often prompt requests for quick group photos, alongside genuine smiles, laughter, and warm embraces that make for fantastic images. When children are part of the celebration, they add another layer of energy and spontaneity, creating even more opportunities for natural, storytelling photographs.
Once the party is fully underway, my role as an event photographer shifts. I work discreetly from the edges of the room, capturing candid moments as they unfold — the conversations, the reactions, and the atmosphere that truly reflect what the event felt like to be part of. Of course, there are always a few guests who enjoy playing up to the camera, and I’m very grateful to them — they often provide some of the most fun and dynamic images of the night.
