A delightful photoshoot with very proud parents and their newborn baby in Sevenoaks

Is there anything quite like the excitement that comes with welcoming your first baby? I’m not sure there is, but I am sure that it’s a crazy busy time of your life, and – despite what it feels like at the time – it does fly by all too quickly.

If I hadn’t taken pictures of the fingers and toes of my own children at the time, and pictures of them just managing to lift their heads up when lying on their tummies, I would struggle to remember just how it was.

Being asked to take these sort of pictures for new parents is a special privilege. I am only too aware of how busy and stressed this stage can be, so I aim to make the photo session as relaxed as possible. There are always delays, pauses, feeding breaks, changes of nappies, tantrums – not always all of these in one session, but always some of them! So the session follows what the baby wants to do, and if we need to stop for half an hour that’s all fine.

Organising a photo session also means you can enjoy photographs and aren’t so easy to capture by yourself. I always try to get photographs that will remind you in the years to come of just how tiny your baby was. Their fingers and feet against yours. And photographs of mum and dad holding their baby, or just being a cushion for their newborn.
